Migrate to Computer

October 2021 - Image Capture is not working on iMac to import photos from an iPhone or iPad connect with a cable.

Original Date - January 2017

Your photo processing workflow can be completely mobile, from exposure to ordering prints or displaying presentations.

Another option is to move your edited/stylized photos to a computer for archiving and final processing and printing. There are options for Digital Asset Management, DAM. You could use the operating system's file management tools of folders with sub-folders or a software application that includes cataloging like Adobe Lightroom. Consider the following steps as a place to begin your own workflow processing:
  1. Transfer photo/s to computer
  2. Organize for cataloging and importing (Adobe Lightroom or computer file system)
  3. Images are sRGB and 8-bit from iPhone
  4. Do you need better quality photos for printing? Experiment with this technique: Open in Adobe Photoshop, change mode to AdobeRGB and 16-bit, save
  5. Import to Lightroom and process for print
  6. Backup your photo collection/library/catalog to external drives.
CD-ROM & DVDs go the way of Dodo Birds - does your computer have an optical drive anymore? So if you have photos stored on optical media, it is time to move them into the cloud or at least on USB thumb drives. This is an evolving space. Don't shoe boxes look good now?

If you are like me, there are many old USB drives in a drawer or two. These will be slow to read, write data. It might be a good time to update to USB3 for your photo importing, exporting and archiving.

Macintosh Computers
Each Mac comes with wonderful utility applications that you don't see making headlines. Two come to mind in the realm of photography: Preview and Image Capture - find them in your Applications folder. These applications have been core to the operating system: Preview 10.3 and Image Capture 10.4.

Preview is operating system image/video viewer and PDF viewer/editor. Actually, Preview can view Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel documents; Apple Pages, Keynote and Numbers documents;  audio WAV, MP3 sounds; text files; webarchives and more. Preview can also compress PDFs into smaller sizes if you must send documents as email attachments.

The best kept secret for Preview is when browsing files on your Mac using the Finder, select a file with a single click (highlight the file name or icon) and press the Spacebar to preview the file. Use the arrow keys to view the next image... Press Spacebar to end preview.

Image Capture is a driverless importer of images from digital cameras and scanners. Use a USB cable to attach a camera, scanner or iOS device to your Mac and open Image Capture.

When the list of images (and sound files) appears, select individual files or a sequence of files to transfer from device to computer. Best kept secret of Image Capture is if your camera or iOS device stores EXIF and GPS data, you will see this information on screen. Sort by any column.

After you have confirmed file transfer and backup of images, you can use Image Capture to select and delete files on your iOS device. Be careful. This cannot be undone - there is no trash to empty!

Actually, you might have to quit Photos, iPhoto and iTunes after attaching an iOS device. In my case, I've turned off the automatic launching of these apps so I can get directly to Image Capture.
